EMMA DAVIE | Documentary Maker/ Programme Director of Postgraduate Documentary, Edinburgh College of Art, University of Edinburgh | Scotland
Emma has made a wide variety of documentaries for national and international broadcasters. Most recently she has directed a one hour film for BBC which was shown at COP “ Black, black Oil” about how the need to move beyond fossil fuels plays out in the complexities of North Sea Oil. Davie’s “Becoming Animal”, co-directed with Swiss Canadian Peter Mettler has played at festivals all over the world including IDFA, Jihlava, RIDM and been nominated for best documentary at CPH Dox, Edinburgh Film Festival, Documenta Madrid and many more.
Previous work includes “I am Breathing”, co-directed with a fiction filmmaker, Morag MacKinnon. This film was nominated for 3 Scottish BAFTA’s, won a Scottish BAFTA for Best Director and played in over 50 countries. “What Age Can you Start Being an Artist?” for Channel 4 which was shortlisted for a Grierson; “Gigha. Buying Our Island”; and “Flight” which was a co-production with Canada .
She currently teaches at Edinburgh College of Art on the postgraduate course in documentary directing and supervises many documentaries internationally. She is a member of the Academy and is also on the Assembly of Doxbox and has been on several juries including IDFA, Visions du reel. She programmed documentaries for the Edinburgh Film Festival, was on the board of EDN for 4 years and taught at the European Film College in Denmark for a year. She has also written widely on documentary making practice and has given lectures and workshops all over the world with many different organisations including IDFA, Baltic See Docs, Ex Oriente, Doc Montevideo, Africadocs, Below Zero and more.
