MAYU HIRANO MAYU HIRANO, Executive Producer, Temjin TV, Japan

The multi award-winning film and television producer based in Japan, Mayu Hirano started her career in 1993, directing documentaries about social issues, human interest, and arts & culture.

She joined TEMJIN in 2000, and has since developed various documentary and historical programs. After Tohoku disaster, she had produced documentary series called ‘Tomorrow beyond 3.11’ for four years to bring victims real voices from the affected regions out to the world. 

Since 2014, she has served as Executive Producer, for internationally co-producing documentaries. In 2017 she has pitched at Hot Docs: ‘Only I Can Hear’ A coming-of-age story about a hearing girl living in rural America with her deaf family.

Taking the Covid-19 outbreak as an opportunity, she launched a platform called Docu Meme, where documentary film makers are able to convey their Coved-19 related stories. Her goal is to convey the emotion of those who try to survive desperately while facing the social distortion created by the pandemic, as Memes.

Temjin Co., Ltd., a Tokyo-based TV production company establish in 1987, has made numerous documentaries with a particular emphasis on China. Recently, they have expanded their operations to create challenging and highly-acclaimed projects around the world via international co-productions. Their team of experienced filmmakers seeks to reveal the truth behind the story, earning us the trust and respect of our collaborators.

They have won numerous national and international awards for documentary productions, including the Silver Plaque for Documentary: Arts/Humanities from the Chicago International Film Festival. Some of their recent international co-productions include ‘Estonian Boys’ Sumo’ and ‘General Elections in Kenya’ and foreign children raised in China during the 1960s and 1970s known as ‘Red Children’, among others.
