Mayu Hirano is an award-winning international filmmaker renowned for her work spanning decades in documentaries and factual programs. She is a member of the Tokyo Docs committee and a former jury member for the International Emmy Awards.
Representative co-produced works include Red Children (CNEX, Taiwan), Only I Can Hear (Megafun, Canada), and DOCDAYS Productions, Germany.
Her current projects as a producer include Change of Wind, a collaboration with Indian director Malati Rao that explores the story of the LGBTQ movement in India. Additionally, she is serving as the director for Shaking Up Sake, which chronicles the journey of a family dedicated to producing the highest quality Japanese sake investing $59 million to establish a brewery in New York to conquer the world with their sake by hiring American workers and collaborating with a family-owned rice farmer in Arkansas
TOKYO DOCS and RITORNELLO FILMS
TOKYO DOCS is an international pitching event supporting documentaries' global expansion. It fosters co-productions and networking opportunities for Japanese and Asian filmmakers with domestic and international decision-makers to secure funding and distribution sales.
RITORNELLO FILMS, established in 2021 by three filmmakers, a production house specialising in impactful documentaries aimed at societal benefit, seeks to create a new framework for developing both domestic and international films led by filmmakers.
Their mission is to amplify documentaries and give a voice to society. Focused on international productions, their projects include A Treasured Creation (14 episodes in production) and collaborations with NHK, MIC, and the BBC.
